Powell Butte Family Portraits

One of my favorite Fall time photo locations is Powell Butte Nature Park in Portland (well…almost to Gresham). There are old orchards, big expanses of uncut grass fields, rustic fences and well maintained trails. During a typical family portrait session we use only 5% of the park but I always encourage clients to come back and explore the seemingly endless trails in the other sections of the park. The city is currently underway with a major construction project to add additional underground water storage but that has not stopped any of my families from having a blast on the butte.

Brides Brides Brides…at The McLean House

I had the pleasure of photographing three beautiful women in bridal gowns at The McLean House in West Linn. I offered my services to help update the photography for this beautiful venue. Built in 1927 by Dr. Edward McLean it is owned today by the City of West Linn who, in partnership with the “Friends of the McLean House, ” rent the facilities for weddings and special events. I sent out a need for women with gowns, not knowing what kind of response I would get. To my surprise and excitement the response was overwhelming! The weather was perfect and we even lucked out with a full moon for a little Halloween wedding feel at the end of the day.

I have to give a special thank you to Janice Morrow of Morrow’s Flowers in West Linn who provided a beautiful bouquet for our brides to hold. I can highly recommend her services as a very elegant florist. Bren Minors, whose wedding I photographed on the 4th of July, did an amazing job as our hair and makeup artist. She drove up from her home in Albany for the day and created three very gorgeously distinct hair styles in a very short time. Thank you everyone, I couldn’t have done this without you.

If you are planning an intimate wedding of 100 guests or less The McLean House is great. The photo opportunities are endless. As I wanted any image that I created to be able to be duplicated on a real wedding day I packed only the camera gear I would typically have at a wedding. These are a few of my favorites.

Summer is Leaving

This summer has been beyond amazing for my garden. Beyond photography my vegetable garden is a constant obsession. With a combination of old Starbucks coffee grounds and a little cow manure my Brandywine tomato plants grew over 7 feet tall! For the first time I bought my tomato starts from The Portland Nursery and couldn’t have been happier. I never thought I could get enough Boston pickling cucumbers but by the end of last month I was sadly mistaken. What was a selfish start to the season with me eating a bowl full of tomatoes, cucumbers, fresh basil and balsamic vinegar every night for dinner soon became a mad dash to give away as much as I could before it spoiled. I ran across these pictures and thought I would share the joy of raising your own vegetables.

Italy Inspired Wedding in West Linn

Amanda and Mark were married at New Life Church in West Linn. After a ceremony at the church, the party moved to West Linn High School across the street. As they had both loved their time in Italy, they decided to use it as inspiration for the day. Instead of cake, they fed each other tiramisu out of champagne flutes. However, I think that the chocolate chip cannoli was my favorite. A beautiful and classic wedding. Congratulations to you both.

Maria and Caleb. Wedding in Forest Gove

I have to thank Maria and Caleb for such a fun day with them and their families. They were married at the Visitation Catholic Church in Forest Grove. It is a beautiful turn of the century church with high celeings and two story stained glass windows. My favorite detail to the church was two stands of ancient Cedar trees. They provided a great backdrop and beautiful light for the couple’s first look just.

No detail was overlooked from the brand new hardwood dance floor and gazeebo to the gigantic fresh cut floral arrangements. It was apparent that a great deal of work went into the planning and executing of this day.

Having time before your wedding for some killer bridal portraits is so much fun. After their first look we took some photos around the church and then drove to a corn field about three minutes from the church for some more portraits. Then, near the end of the reception we walked to the field behind the reception for some sunset shots. What a perfect end to a great day.

I also have to give a shout out to Bust A Move DJ services for having, in my opinion, the best performance this summer. A good DJ not only keeps the music flowing, but also does a great job of helping the flow of the reception and getting your guests on that dance floor. The more people dancing the more fun it is for everyone and the better the photos are!

After their first look we also took some photos around the church and then drove to a corn field about three minutes from the church for some more portraits. Then, near the end of the reception we walked to the field behind the reception for some sunset shots. What a perfect end to a great day.
